Synopsis

Ken Kaneki is the protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul, introduced as a bookish literature student at Kamii University with a quiet, gentle disposition. His ordinary life ends after a date with the ghoul Rize Kamishiro turns fatal — surgeons unknowingly transplant her organs into him, leaving Kaneki neither fully human nor fully ghoul, the first known artificial one-eyed ghoul.

Taken in by Yoshimura at the Anteiku café, Kaneki learns to survive between two worlds, forming a found family with Touka Kirishima, Hinami Fueguchi, and his best friend Hideyoshi Nagachika. Capture and torture at the hands of Yakumo Oomori later shatter his gentle personality, hardening him into a far more ruthless fighter willing to use violence to protect the people he loves.

As the story progresses, Kaneki assumes several identities — leader of his own splinter group, an undercover CCG investigator known as Haise Sasaki, and eventually the One-Eyed King who ends the war between humans and ghouls. He ultimately marries Touka Kirishima and becomes a father, closing the series as a writer and peacekeeper rather than a fighter.
