Synopsis
Sōma Yukihira is the protagonist of Shokugeki no Souma, a member of the 92nd Tōtsuki generation and, for a time, the 1st seat of the Elite Ten Council. He grew up helping his father, Jōichirō Yukihira, run the family's diner, Restaurant Yukihira, and by his last year of elementary school the two had already fought 489 cooking duels, all of which Sōma lost. That unbroken losing streak, rather than any natural gift, is what pushes him to enroll at Tōtsuki Culinary Academy.
Sōma is defined by relentless optimism and a refusal to back down, even against classmates from far more prestigious culinary backgrounds. He treats every defeat as a lesson rather than a humiliation, constantly experimenting until he finds an unconventional solution nobody else would try. This same fearlessness makes him reckless: he repeatedly risks expulsion by challenging seniors to Shokugeki duels he has no guarantee of winning.
Despite an entrance speech that alienates much of his class, Sōma quickly becomes one of the most well-liked students at the Polar Star Dormitory. His warmth turns former rivals such as Ikumi Mito, Takumi Aldini and Alice Nakiri into close allies, and his growing friendship with Erina Nakiri becomes one of the series' central threads.
