Birth Place: Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan
Sugii Gisaburou is an anime director and Nihonga artist. He has worked in all the major forms of Japanese commercial anime production. These have included projects as diverse as the very sophisticated Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru and Murasaki Shikibu's Genji Monogatari to martial arts mayhem in Street Fighter II and children's productions like Jack to Mame no Ki and Super Doll Licca-chan as well as the very popular Glass no Kamen and Touch television series.
Born on August 20, 1940 in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, Sugii became an inbetweener with Toei Doga when he was nineteen years old. In the early sixties he went to work for Osamu Tezuka's Mushi Productions. Since Tezuaka sold Mushi in 1973 he has worked for a number of studios but most of his work has been with Group Tac. Since 2006 he has been on the faculty of Kyoto Seika University. He is the younger brother of the ex-Tatsunoko Production animator 杉井興治. He is also a member of Japan Animation Creators Association (JAniCA).
