Synopsis
Tonpa is the self-proclaimed Rookie Crusher of the 287th Hunter Exam. He first sat the exam at the age of ten and has taken it thirty-four times since — never passing, because passing was never the point.
He is a short, fat man with tan skin, brown hair, a large nose and thick eyebrows, dressed in a loose blue V-neck shirt marked with a white symbol on the right side over light blue-grey sweatpants, with a satchel permanently slung over one shoulder.
After failing the exam several times, Tonpa came to enjoy other people's failures so much that he began actively wrecking their ambitions at the cost of his own. The hobby fascinates him enough that he will push weaker applicants into situations that could easily kill them. His standard move is a "friendly" drink laced with laxative, offered to newcomers.
He is not entirely heartless, though: he was genuinely worried when Killua drank what he believed to be poison.
It was he who introduced himself to Gon, Kurapika and Leorio in the underground tunnel and pointed out the exam's other regulars. According to Nicholas, his performances are impressive enough that he would have passed long ago had that been his actual objective.
