Kurapika

Kurapika is the last surviving member of the Kurta Clan and the Rat of the Hunter Association's Zodiacs. The Phantom Troupe knows him only as the Chain Bastard.

He has medium-length blond hair and brown eyes — blue in the 1999 adaptation, grey in the 2011 one. Intense emotion makes them glow scarlet: it is these Scarlet Eyes that made his clan a target in the first place.

Kurapika is cool-headed, widely read and formidably intelligent. He is reticent, slow to open up and quick to judge. The distance he keeps from others long kept him level-headed and moralistic — until losing everyone he loved at the age of twelve poisoned his heart with grief and hatred. With those few he trusts, though, he can be genuinely warm.

He was born in a secluded forest in the Lukso Province. As a child he nearly fell from a cliff and was saved by his closest friend Pairo, who wrecked both his legs and his eyesight doing it. The guilt is what drove Kurapika out into the wider world to find a doctor.

His power grows sharply as the series progresses; Hisoka flagged him during the exam as one of several "unripe fruit" of vast potential. As a Zodiac his authority within the Association is second only to the Chairman's. Voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro in the 2011 series and Yuki Kaida in the 1999 one.
