Synopsis
Joji Saiga spent decades as a professor of clinical psychology, lecturing on criminal profiling to Public Safety Bureau Inspectors before his classes were quietly shut down when several attendees' Psycho-Passes began to deteriorate. He retreated into a deliberately old-fashioned, reclusive life — growing his own food, avoiding holograms — while remaining one of the sharpest observers of human behavior in the series, able to deduce startling details about a person from small, seemingly unremarkable habits.
Former student Shinya Kogami continues to seek his counsel long after retirement, eventually asking Saiga to train rookie Inspector Akane Tsunemori in profiling. Tsunemori comes to respect him deeply in turn, later persuading him to formally join the Bureau as an Analyst, where he strikes up an easy professional rapport with fellow Analyst Shion Karanomori. His return to the CID proves costly, however: exposure to the work clouds his own Psycho-Pass, and he is repeatedly confined to a rehabilitation center.
Saiga's story ends far from any classroom — he is killed years later while taking part in a joint operation against a criminal organization known as the Peacebreakers.
