Synopsis
Shogo Makishima is the mastermind who drives much of the first season's tragedy, a man whose crime coefficient never clouds no matter how much suffering he causes or witnesses. Doctors call this condition criminally asymptomatic, and it lets him move through society undetected while orchestrating murder after murder. His stated goal is to shatter the Sibyl System, which he sees as reducing free human beings to obedient automatons.
Well-read and eerily persuasive, Makishima quotes Shakespeare and dystopian novelists as easily as he manipulates the people around him, from his loyal hacker Gu-sung Choe to the young artist he mentors under a false identity at Oso Academy, Rikako Oryo. He guides a serial killer through what becomes known as the Specimen Case, a spree that claims the life of Enforcer Mitsuru Sasayama and sets Shinya Kogami on his trail.
Makishima and Kogami become each other's obsession: two men who understand one another better than anyone else in their lives, standing on opposite sides of the same conviction that Sibyl's judgment is not to be trusted blindly. Their rivalry ends only when Kogami finally kills him — an outcome Makishima, by his own philosophy, seems almost to have been seeking.
