Synopsis
Gu-sung Choe is Shogo Makishima's right-hand man and closest thing to a friend, a brilliant hacker who fled war-torn Korea for Japan as a child and eventually loses his original eyes, replaced with artificial ones after an injury. Years of self-directed research make him one of the few people alive able to breach the Sibyl System's core security and glimpse its true, unsettling form.
He treats human life with detached indifference, unbothered by deaths that serve Makishima's goals, though even Choe has limits — he leaves the room rather than watch Rikako Oryo dissect one of her victims. Makishima, in turn, calls him a genius and, unlike his other pawns, seems genuinely reluctant to put Choe's life at risk, treating him more as a confidant and messenger than a mere subordinate.
An avid reader of cyberpunk author William Gibson, Choe ultimately dies in the course of Makishima's schemes, one more casualty of a partnership built on shared contempt for the Sibyl System.
