Synopsis
Akihiro Kanou, often called Professor Kanou, is a physician responsible for Ken Kaneki's transformation into an artificial one-eyed ghoul, using him as a prototype for an experimental ghoulification surgery. Over the years he moves between the CCG, the shadowy organization GFG, and eventually his own hospital before finally joining the terrorist group Aogiri Tree.
Kanou's warm, benevolent bedside manner is entirely genuine in its own way — he disregards regulations whenever it helps him save a patient — but it masks the mind of a disturbed scientist convinced that turning humans into one-eyed ghouls represents the next stage of human evolution. That conviction, formed partly in the wake of his mother's death, leads him to perform increasingly unethical experiments on unwilling subjects, Kaneki and Seidou Takizawa among them.
As the mastermind behind several of the series' artificial ghouls, Kanou's research quietly reshapes the story's central conflict, turning ordinary humans like Kaneki, Takizawa, and Koutarou Amon into hybrid beings that blur the line between the two warring sides.
