Synopsis
Akira Hayama is a 92nd-generation Tōtsuki student, assistant to lecturer Jun Shiomi, and winner of the 43rd Tōtsuki Autumn Election, celebrated for a sense of smell keen enough to rival Erina Nakiri's God's Tongue. Orphaned and living in the slums of an unnamed country, he survived by scavenging until a young Jun Shiomi noticed him warning a stranger away from a poor batch of spices and adopted him on the spot.
Calm, confident and rarely rattled by anything short of outright disrespect toward Jun, Akira only ever thinks about winning and openly declares he intends to take Erina's place at the top of Tōtsuki. Nearly everything he does traces back to gratitude toward Jun, whom he credits with giving him a reason to cook in the first place, to the point that he turns down a lucrative corporate job just to keep working as her assistant.
Akira's arc darkens once he is blackmailed into joining Central, a faction whose ideals he privately rejects. His arrogance grows noticeably harsher during that period, but his underlying loyalty to Jun, and his quiet regret over betraying friends such as Sōma Yukihira, never fully disappear.
