Sayo

Sayo is a childhood friend of Tatsumi and Ieyasu, the two setting out together for the Capital to earn money for their impoverished home village. Quick-tempered but kind and knowledgeable, she is invited, along with Ieyasu, into the household of the wealthy Aria, where the two are drugged and taken captive.

Sayo endures prolonged torture at the hands of Aria's family, targeted with particular cruelty out of Aria's petty jealousy over her hair, yet holds onto her hope and dignity until her death from the abuse. Her death, alongside Ieyasu's, becomes the tragedy that finally pushes Tatsumi into joining Night Raid and taking up arms against the Empire's corruption.
