Synopsis
Olaf was a Norse warrior and Danish lord, the father of Askeladd and the brother of Gorm. In Vinland Saga he appears only in recollection, yet his choices shape much of who his son becomes.
Self-centered and coarse, Olaf lived for women, drink, and battle. He deigned to name only the children born to his lawful wives. While raiding the coast of Wales he took Lydia as a concubine and favoured her in her youth, but once she fell ill he tired of her and treated her like a dog. As a result, Lydia and their son Askeladd endured abysmal conditions.
One day the sick Lydia mistook Olaf for Artorius and got in his path, and he raised his sword to strike her down. The young Askeladd seized a blade and blocked the blow, shielding his mother. Impressed by the boy's skill despite his complete lack of training, Olaf welcomed him into his hall and raised him alongside his trueborn sons — never noticing the resentment festering in the bastard. In time, Askeladd killed him as he lay naked beside a woman.
Olaf was voiced by Jiro Saito in Japanese, and by Sean Patrick Judge and Jason Marnocha in English.
