Synopsis

Tooru Oikawa is the captain and setter of Aoba Johsai High, and the primary rival standing in Karasuno's way during the Interhigh and Spring tournament qualifiers. His fascination with volleyball began early, but the decision to become a setter crystallized after watching a Japan–Argentina match, where the Argentine setter's ability to steady a struggling ace left a lasting impression on him.

His breezy, flirtatious public persona — the reason he draws crowds of admirers, to the visible envy of Ryuunosuke Tanaka and Yuu Nishinoya — masks total dedication to the sport. Oikawa runs extra solo practices, studies footage of rivals late into the night, and is constantly hunting for weaknesses, his own included. That work ethic comes from a real insecurity: he measures himself against players he considers naturally gifted, above all Wakatoshi Ushijima and Kageyama, whom he mockingly calls Tobio-chan even while privately resenting how effortlessly the younger setter's talent seems to come to him.

After graduating, Oikawa earned Argentine citizenship and became the starting setter for a professional club in Argentina, eventually representing the country's national team.
