Synopsis
Yuu Nishinoya is Karasuno's libero, nicknamed the Guardian Deity of Karasuno by teammates for his extraordinary receiving skill. As a child he was afraid of nearly everything — moths, bicycles, a neighborhood dog — until his eccentric grandfather pushed him to confront each fear head-on, arguing there was no point wasting time being scared. The lesson stuck, and Nishinoya grew into one of the loudest, boldest presences on the team.
He is boisterous, quick-tempered, and says whatever crosses his mind without much filtering. Alongside Ryuunosuke Tanaka, he mounts constant, largely unsuccessful campaigns to impress team manager Kiyoko Shimizu. On the court, though, all that impulsiveness disappears: Nishinoya turns intensely focused, staying calm under pressure and diving for every ball until his legs give out, which is exactly why the rest of the team trusts him without reservation.
Before Karasuno, Nishinoya attended Chidoriyama Junior High, where he already earned a reputation as an outstanding libero. After graduating high school, he chose to set volleyball aside for a while and left Japan to travel.
