Synopsis

Frederica Bernkastel (voiced by Tamura Yukari) is one of the strangest figures connected to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, appearing in person only once, right at the end of the Matsuribayashi-hen arc. There she reveals herself to a child named Miyoko, explaining that she now spends her time travelling between worlds and toying with the "pieces," or kakera, inside them. Her striking resemblance to Rika Furude is no accident: she is described as the culmination of everything Rika eventually became after living through countless repeated worlds, and she sometimes speaks of Rika's experiences as her own.

One theory holds that Frederica was born from Rika's despair and exhaustion once she gave up trying to break the cycle of fate — a hardened, hundred-year-old persona splitting away from the eleven-year-old girl still trapped inside the games.

Her single on-screen appearance is quietly unsettling: she asks little Miyoko whether she wants to "live or die," and the girl's answer sends her down a path where she never grows up to become Takano Miyo or meet Takano Hifumi, seemingly steering that timeline toward a gentler outcome.

Beyond the anime, Frederica looms larger across the franchise's novels and manga: it is the name Rika first adopts to separate herself from her past selves, she is credited as the author of the poems that open each story arc, and in the manga she meets Rika in the realm of kakera to discuss the patterns that keep repeating behind Hinamizawa's tragedies. She insists that she and Rika are not the same person, and just as firmly denies being Oyashiro-sama.
