Synopsis

Furude Rika is the daughter of Hinamizawa's late Shinto priest and the current miko of the Furude Shrine, from one of the village's "three great houses." Though she spends much of the story looking like a quiet, secondary character, later arcs of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai reveal her as its true protagonist — the figure around whose recurring death nearly every tragedy in Hinamizawa pivots — and she takes center stage as narrator in the Minagoroshi-hen chapter. Villagers hold her in special reverence, believing her the reincarnation of the local deity Oyashiro-sama.

That belief is tied to her hereditary status as the so-called "Queen Carrier" of the Furude line, which draws the attention of the researcher Miyo Takano, who proves willing to eliminate anyone standing between her and Rika, including Rika's own parents. Across the story's many looping timelines, Rika dies again and again, carrying fragments of memory from world to world, until she finally finds a way to break the cycle.

In public, Rika hides behind an exaggeratedly cute persona: she drops honorifics, calls herself by the boyish pronoun "boku," and peppers her speech with playful sounds. In private, especially when speaking with her constant companion Hanyuu, whom only she can see, she reveals a far more cynical, weary "true" self, worn down by countless repeated lifetimes.

Rika's closest bond is with her best friend and housemate Satoko Houjou. She is also deeply attached to Keiichi Maebara and Rena Ryuuguu, and shares a rare, hard-earned trust with the detective Mamoru Akasaka.
