Satoko Houjou is one of the main characters of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni franchise and the younger sister of Satoshi Houjou. Raised amid her mother's string of marriages and divorces, Satoko took to playing cruel pranks on her stepfathers, including a false abuse accusation against one of them. Because her parents backed Hinamizawa's Dam Project, the family was branded "traitors" by the village, and Satoko grew convinced her parents meant to get rid of her — a delusion tied to the terminal stage of Hinamizawa Syndrome. According to Dr. Irie's account, she pushed her parents off a cliff during the Watanagashi Festival, though an alternate storyline frames their deaths as a tragic accident instead.
Hospitalized afterward at the Irie Clinic and nearly used as a research subject, Satoko survived thanks to the experimental drug C-103 developed by Kyousuke Irie, who became something of a foster father to her. She and Satoshi were then taken in by their uncle Teppei Houjou and his wife, where Satoko suffered further abuse until her brother intervened and subsequently vanished. She has lived since with her orphaned best friend Rika Furude.
Beneath the trauma, Satoko is energetic and mischievous, known for her distinctive laugh and sharp "vampire fangs," and for rigging elaborate traps — most often aimed at Keiichi Maebara. She can also be sharply analytical, as when she reconstructs the school's entire layout from memory during a hostage crisis. She calls her brother, and later Keiichi, "Nii-Nii," while her bond with Shion Sonozaki — who once turned violently against her before becoming fiercely protective — earns Shion the nickname "Nee-Nee."
Later story arcs reveal that Satoko has gained the same ability as Rika to loop through fragments of time, while "Saikoroshi-hen" depicts an alternate, colder version of her from a world untouched by tragedy.
