Synopsis
Yui, officially designated Yui-MHCP001, is an artificial intelligence originally built by the game's developers to monitor players' mental health inside Sword Art Online. When the game's creator turned it into a death game and forbade any direct interference with players, Yui was left to watch their psychological state decline without being able to help, which eventually overloaded her programming and caused her to collapse into a corrupted, childlike state.
She is found in this condition by Kirito and Asuna, who mistake her for a lost child and unofficially adopt her. Curious and affectionate, Yui gradually recalls fragments of her original purpose while bonding with the couple, coming to see them as her real parents rather than merely two players she was assigned to observe.
Later freed from the confines of the dying game system, Yui persists as a navigation-pixie AI across ALfheim Online and subsequent VR worlds, continuing to travel with Kirito and Asuna. Despite her artificial origins, she is written and treated by the other characters as a genuine member of the family the two of them build together.
