Synopsis
Kazuto Kirigaya is the protagonist of Sword Art Online, known in-game by the alias Kirito. Selected as one of a thousand beta testers for the world's first full-dive VRMMORPG, he was among the ten thousand players trapped inside Aincrad when the game's creator turned it into a death game with real-world stakes. Having private knowledge from the beta, he chose to fight alone rather than join a guild, which later earned him a reputation as a cheat before he took the harsher label of beater upon himself to shield other former testers from blame.
Outwardly reserved and blunt, Kirito struggles to open up to people, a trait he attributes to years spent more comfortable with computers than with classmates. Underneath that distance is a fierce loyalty: he risks his life repeatedly for friends, most notably Asuna, who becomes his partner and, later, adoptive family alongside the AI child Yui.
Raised by his aunt and uncle after his birth parents died, Kazuto grew up alongside his cousin Suguha, training in kendo before computers took over his attention, a shift that quietly reshaped their relationship. Over the course of the series he clears Aincrad by defeating the game master and continues fighting through ALfheim Online, Gun Gale Online, and beyond.
