Synopsis
Mother Tanashi is a minor supporting character in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, introduced during the Matsuribayashi-hen arc. She is the wife of Takemitsu Tanashi and the mother of their young daughter, Miyoko; unlike her husband, she has no credited voice actress and never speaks on screen.
The arc's darkest timeline reveals that the family was involved in a fatal accident — a train or a bus, depending on the adaptation. Mother Tanashi died instantly, while Takemitsu survived just long enough to reach a hospital, tell Miyoko that her mother was gone, and ask his old professor, Hifumi Takano, to take care of their daughter before he too succumbed to his injuries.
What little is shown of Mother Tanashi comes through Miyoko's memories: grainy, home-movie-style flashbacks of the family sharing a meal at a restaurant, where young Miyoko happily received the small souvenir flag that started her collecting habit. In the arc's kinder resolution, where the accident never happens, the story closes with her voice calling from outside her daughter's room, reminding Miyoko to brush her teeth before bed.
