Takashi

Takashi builds a career as a doctor and falls for a woman named Machiko, marrying her with the confidence of someone sure of his choice. That confidence cracks at their own wedding, when he overhears two guests gossiping about a friend's affair and, without ever confirming the details, convinces himself Machiko must be the one they're talking about.

Unwilling to call off a wedding already in motion, he says nothing and lets suspicion fester instead. On their honeymoon, Machiko's ringing phone goes unanswered, and his doubt tips into certainty; grabbing for the phone while driving, he causes the crash that kills them both.

Described by Nona as a man who cannot trust anyone, Takashi carries that same suspicion into his trial at Quindecim, increasingly convinced Machiko is only trying to win their game rather than reach him honestly — a belief the arbiters use to draw out exactly the doubt that defined his final days.
