Machiko

Machiko meets her future husband Takashi through a mutual acquaintance, and the two fall in love quickly, eventually getting engaged. She keeps two things from him during their relationship: an early, secret pregnancy, and a moment of infidelity she immediately regrets and never brings herself to confess.

On their honeymoon, her silence catches up with her. When her phone rings and she doesn't answer, an already suspicious Takashi assumes the worst and grabs for it while driving, sending the car off a cliff and killing them both. She arrives at Quindecim still carrying the guilt of what she hid, torn between protecting her husband and being honest with him.

During their shared trial, she tries — sometimes through lies she regrets even as she tells them — to steer Takashi toward believing in her love rather than his suspicions, willing to sacrifice her own chances if it means he comes out the other side able to trust again.
