Synopsis
Nobuyuki Sugou is the chief researcher at RECT Progress and the main antagonist of the Fairy Dance Arc, operating inside ALfheim Online under the persona of the Fairy King Oberon. Originally selected by Asuna's father to marry her and adopted into the family on his wishes, Sugou maintains a courteous public image while harboring a ruthless, manipulative streak he shows only when no one of consequence is watching.
After Sword Art Online is cleared and its servers' security lapses, Sugou hacks into the system and reroutes three hundred trapped players, including Asuna, into ALfheim Online to use as unwilling test subjects for research into manipulating human memory and emotion, technology he intends to sell. He holds a long-standing rivalry with Kayaba Akihiko, whom he blames for most of his own failures.
His scheme collapses when Kirito confronts him directly inside the game; defeated and exposed, Sugou is arrested for his crimes shortly afterward.
