Synopsis
Keith Shadis was head instructor of the Military Training Corps, responsible for training and evaluating new soldiers. He previously served as the 12th Commander of the Survey Corps and Erwin Smith's direct predecessor, the only Commander in the corps' history to step down rather than die in the role.
In his youth, Keith's fascination with the world beyond the Walls drove him toward the Survey Corps and left him with a self-righteous streak, believing himself uniquely "chosen" after Grisha Yeager's early praise convinced him he was different from everyone else. Years of repeated failures as Commander, contrasted against the successes of his own subordinates, eventually forced him to confront that he wasn't special after all — a realization that culminated in him admitting his failures to a grieving mother and voluntarily resigning his command.
