Synopsis
Issei Matsukawa is a middle blocker for Aoba Johsai High and the tallest of the school's third-year volleyball players. His height and blocking ability make him look intimidating, but Matsukawa is genuinely easygoing and good-natured, always ready with a joke, particularly alongside his close friend Takahiro Hanamaki.
His read on the game impresses even opponents: Matsukawa is quick to notice patterns, such as when Tsukishima gets subbed in as a blocker, and works out how to tell Hinata's normal quick attack apart from the faster variation just from small tells in his approach. Despite Aoba Johsai's loss to Shiratorizawa at the Interhigh, Matsukawa chose to stay on the team with the other third-years rather than retire, determined to get revenge and reach the Spring Tournament.
After graduating, Matsukawa works at a funeral company in Miyagi.
