Synopsis

Ken Kaneki's mother is the human woman who, after her husband's death, raised her son alone in Tokyo Ghoul. A slender figure with short black hair and glasses, she juggled two jobs while also keeping house, leaving her sick and exhausted most of the time. The relentless overwork ultimately killed her when Ken Kaneki was only ten years old.

She lived by a simple creed: that it is better to become the person who gets hurt than to hurt others, and that a kind heart finds happiness in love alone. She never refused a request for help, even handing money to her demanding older sister despite being a struggling single mother — a burden that hastened her death.

Kaneki's memory of her is contradictory. Beneath her outward gentleness, she sometimes struck her young son, and he carried a deeply buried resentment. These recollections surfaced in the illusions Rize inflicted on him, eventually triggering an emotional breakdown. A supporting character of the original series, she was voiced by Rieko Takahashi in Japanese, Anastasia Munoz in the anime, and Amber Lee Connors in the film.
