Synopsis
Hordaland, whose real name is never revealed, is a young woman from the Norwegian region of Hordaland, after which she was renamed. She once belonged to the family of a local feudal lord, but after her clan was defeated in war the household collapsed and she was sold into slavery. In Vinland Saga she appears as a slave owned by the merchant Gorm.
Despite her harsh treatment, Hordaland remains remarkably gentle. Gorm whips her and mocks her as a slow, prideful rich girl, yet she still finds the very idea of killing him horrible. Askeladd, a guest at Gorm's home, remarks that the girl's uselessness is not her fault but rather her master's failure to make good use of her.
Her defining moment comes aboard a Viking ship, where she is sent to bring food to Thorfinn. She asks whether he too is a slave; he curtly insists he is a warrior. When she says fleeing would change nothing, since violence, war, and slavery are everywhere, Thorfinn echoes the words of Thors and tells her of a distant, warm land called Vinland, free of war and bondage.
She is voiced by Reina Kondō in Japanese, and by Alexis Tipton (Sentai) and Ryan Hartley (VSI) in English.
