Synopsis
Gunnar is a politician and court adviser who appears in the latter half of the first season of Vinland Saga. He is the older brother of Ragnar, the loyal caretaker of Prince Canute, and closely resembles him, though with a gaunter face set off by a mustache and goatee. Born around 974, he is presented as an aging man with balding black hair at his first appearance in 1014.
On the surface, Gunnar behaves much like his brother, lavishing praise on Prince Canute and posing as one of his supporters. In truth this devotion is an act: he secretly works as a double agent for King Sweyn Forkbeard, Canute's father, operating against the prince's interests within the court.
Gunnar figures into the storylines surrounding the war and Canute's subsequent rise to power. He is voiced in Japanese by Tsuguo Mogami, and in English by Jeremy Gee (Sentai dub) and Tony Oliver (VSI dub).
