Synopsis
Izumi Akazawa serves as head of the countermeasures committee for Class 3-3 in 1998, later becoming class representative as well. She takes personal responsibility for enforcing the class's strange rules meant to prevent students from dying, a job that puts her constantly at odds with the newly arrived Kouichi Sakakibara.
Blunt and quick-tempered, Izumi hides real insecurity behind a confident, sometimes harsh exterior; she is fiercely protective of friends like Takako Sugiura and struggles openly with guilt whenever the countermeasures fail. Her volunteering for the role stems from an earlier, unrelated tragedy: the death of a cousin she was raised alongside like a brother, a loss she never fully processes over the course of the story.
As the body count rises through the summer, Izumi grows increasingly convinced that Mei Misaki is the source of the calamity, and her attempts to stop Mei by force drive much of the story's climax. Underneath the hostility, though, is a more complicated, unspoken attachment to Kouichi that only surfaces once it is too late to matter.
