Synopsis
Mei Misaki is a third-year student at Yomiyama North Middle School and the female lead of Another. From the first day of the 1998 school year, her classmates treat her as though she is invisible, a quiet arrangement she never explains to new transfer student Kouichi Sakakibara.
She wears an eyepatch over a prosthetic left eye, a gift from her aunt after childhood illness took her real one; through it she can see a color that marks who is already fated to die. Mei keeps mostly to herself, sketching in the art club and voicing a blunt, matter-of-fact view of loneliness, but she gradually opens up to Kouichi, sharing details about her family and the class's grim history that she withholds from everyone else.
Her guarded nature traces back to the death of her twin sister, whom she grew up believing was only a cousin. That loss, more than the surrounding curse, shapes how she copes with everything that follows, including a choice late in the story to put herself at risk rather than let anyone else be harmed.
