Synopsis
Yasunori Ryuuguu is the father of Rena Ryuuguu, introduced in the "Tsumihoroboshi-hen" arc of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. He met Rena's mother, Reiko Ryuuguu, while both worked as designers at a small clothing manufactory in Okinomiya. The two married and settled in the town, briefly moving into his mother's house before Rena started elementary school. When Reiko was offered a promising job at a design firm in Ibaraki, the family relocated and Yasunori gave up his own career to become a homemaker, a role he struggled with — he could barely cook, and young Rena ended up taking over much of the housework herself.
As Reiko's career took off, she began an affair with a coworker and grew distant, eventually wanting to take Rena away and leave Yasunori for good. He fell into depression as the marriage collapsed and Reiko refused all contact, even declining to read a letter he sent her through their daughter.
Later, Yasunori began seeing a woman named Rina Mamiya, whom he met at a club in Okinomiya, unaware that she and her partner Teppei Houjou were running a con on him — faking a pregnancy to push him toward marriage before turning to extortion. Rena's intervention stopped the scheme before it could go further. In an alternate telling of events, Minagoroshi-hen, Rena instead confided in her father about the situation herself, and Yasunori found a new job.
He is voiced by Gen Nakano in Japanese and Kyle Hebert in English, and was played by Sugawara Daikichi in the live-action film Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Chikai.
