Nate River, known as Near, is the younger of L's two successors raised in Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children in Winchester, England. He calmly assesses situations, contrasting with his emotional counterpart Mello. Near exhibits odd behaviors, such as playing with toys he uses in his theories. He shows great respect for L, basing his investigative methods on L's approaches. His character in "Death Note" evokes mixed reactions, as his actions are perceived as cunning and sometimes annoying.
