Synopsis
Rintarou Okabe is a university student in Akihabara who calls himself a self-proclaimed mad scientist under the alias Hououin Kyouma, though his friends simply call him Okarin. He founded the Future Gadget Laboratory with his childhood friends and, in the summer of 2010, moved into its cramped apartment above an old CRT-television shop.
Loud, theatrical, and prone to rambling about a secret Organization supposedly hunting him, Okabe uses his mad-scientist persona as armor. He invented it as a teenager to comfort Mayuri Shiina after her grandmother's death, and the role has shaped how he copes with fear and loss ever since.
When one of the lab's gadgets turns out to be a genuine time machine, Okabe becomes the only person able to retain his memories across shifting timelines, a trait his friends name Reading Steiner. That ability turns him into the sole line of defense against the disasters his own experiments unleash, driving him to leap through time again and again to save Kurisu Makise.
