Synopsis
Atsumu Matsuyuki, nicknamed Yukiatsu, is a member of the Super Peace Busters and a childhood friend of Jinta Yadomi, Naruko Anjou, Chiriko Tsurumi, Tetsudou Hisakawa, and Meiko Honma. In the present he treats Jinta with open contempt, and any mention of Menma visibly rattles him.
Atsumu still can't let go of Menma's memory: he keeps a white sundress in his closet, similar to the one she wore the day she died. For a time he even wore a wig and that same dress on nighttime walks through the forest, claiming to see Menma's ghost — the ghost, it turns out, was him all along. He blames himself for her death, since he'd confessed his feelings to her on the very day of the accident.
He and Naruko recognize a shared bond in being left behind by unrequited feelings for Jinta and Menma, respectively. Atsumu is exceptionally bright and attends a prestigious high school, ranking second in his class behind only Chiriko. His given name means to gather or assemble, while Matsuyuki combines the characters for pine tree and snow.
