Katsuya Kumagai

Katsuya Kumagai, nicknamed "Kuma-chan," is a young officer with the Okinomiya police department who works closely under detective Kuraudo Ooishi. He first appears in Onikakushi-hen, when Ooishi orders him to dispatch a patrol to intervene before Keiichi Maebara can harm himself. From that point on, Kumagai regularly accompanies Ooishi on his investigations into the string of deaths and disappearances plaguing Hinamizawa, including the grim discovery of Shion Sonozaki's body.

Despite differences in his design across the various Higurashi adaptations, Kumagai is consistently portrayed as a good-looking young man. In the anime and manga he has black hair and wears a shirt and tie or a work suit, while in the Alchemist visual novel releases he has purple hair and a suit; he had no sprite of his own in the original sound novels. He was born on August 12.

Kumagai is voiced by Takuo Kawamura in Japanese and Kyle Hebert in English, and was portrayed by Shumpei Otani in the live-action Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Chikai drama.
