Shuurei Kou is the daughter of Shouka Kou from the Kou clan, one of the most powerful clans in Saiunkoku. Despite her family's high social status, she grew up in relative poverty, as much of their wealth was given to the needy. Shuurei is skilled in household chores and has held various jobs to earn money, including working as a professional erhu player and teaching at a local temple.
