Karupin is used as a symbolic device in the series. For example Nanjirou teases/plays with Karupin in ways that parallel the manner that Ryoma's tennis matches are proceeding.
When Karupin overcomes Nanjirou's teasing, the tide turns in Ryoma's matches.
