Jinbe is a whale shark fishman and the second captain of the Sunny Pirates, having become a Shichibukai eight years ago. His name derives from the Japanese term "jinbei-zame," meaning "whale shark." Jinbe is known by the epithet "Kaikyou," which translates to "Strait" but carries a deeper cultural pun in Japanese. He is a prominent character in the anime "One Piece," which premiered in 1999, and also appears in the film "One Piece 3D2Y: Ace no Shi wo Koete! Luffy Nakama to no Chikai."
