Synopsis
Asgeir serves as first mate and second-in-command to Thorkell in Vinland Saga. He is a man of average build with long hair, a mustache, and a braided beard, usually carrying a sword and a dagger at his belt, though he is seldom shown fighting directly. His defining trait is his intelligence: Asgeir repeatedly advises his commander, keeps watch over him, and takes charge of battle strategy, most notably during the Eastern Expedition.
In most exchanges he comes across as calm and level-headed, but that composure evaporates the moment Thorkell is involved. Around his captain, Asgeir turns hot-tempered and emotional, frequently yelling at him and growing anxious, even panicked, whenever Thorkell is in danger. He first steps into the spotlight when he breaks up the duel between Thorkell and Thorfinn, threatening to kill the young man.
Asgeir and Thorkell share an unusually close bond. The captain listens to his counsel and entrusts him with planning campaigns, while Asgeir addresses him in public by his rank, "Captain" (Japanese taishō), rather than his name. He knows his boss intimately and shows no fear of him, refusing to back down even when Thorkell tries to strangle him.
